Death Grips
NO LOVE WEB DEEP
(SELF-RELEASED)

Death Grips would have you believe that they just don’t care. The band leaked their second full-length of the year, NO LOVE WEB DEEP, supposedly before they even let their record label hear it, replete with an album cover that, suffice it to say, is very not safe for work (ED: The image above is the SFW version). All of this would imply some kind of anti-label coup, or at least a substantial amount of anti-authoritarian punk sneer, which Death Grips seem to embrace both as an aesthetic and as their sonic legacy. As with each new record, Death Grips streamline their sound, progressively allowing for cleaner and more pronounced production sounds. Here they maintain abrasive Bomb Squad-style production techniques on tracks like “World of Dogs” or “Lock Your Doors,” both full of angry samples and paranoia-filled raps. Deliberate in sound and image, it would seem that perhaps Death Grips does care. — Syd Bishop
