Cryptopsy
(SELF-RELEASED)

When groups that release several groundbreaking albums pull the equivalent of a St. Anger, it’s a sign their efforts have become substandard. Such was the case for Cryptopsy after releasing The Unspoken King, a shitfest so bad the backlash led them to disparage their fans. Four years later, now back with original guitarist Jon Levasseur, they set out to restore their good name. Cryptopsy is a return to form and host to a much groovier mindset used to break up the incessant hyper-blasting drums and relentless riffs. Most of the tracks sound like they could appear on either Whisper Supremacy or And Then You’ll Beg. They go back even further and re-imagine their old school origins in the brutal “Cleansing The Host”. Having progressed a long way since their first album in 1994, this album is a fitting comeback of their core line-up and sound. — Austin Weber
