Gangrene: album review

Vodka & Ayahuasca

Alchemist and Oh No are more lauded as producers than emcees. Al has been producing the likes of Mobb Deep, The Lox, and others for years, while Oh No has built a solid following in the shadow of his famous brother Madlib. While the producer-as-emcee record has always been around, they are rarely as satisfying as this pairing. Vodka & Ayahuasca is their second full length and, instead of being the sum of their parts, the two expand their production styles beyond the boom bap and loop-fest their careers were built upon. Vodka leans more toward the avant-garde production of El-P with strings, fuzzed-out guitars and nasty drums. Guest shots from Mobb Deep’s Prodigy, Kool G Rap, Roc Marciano, and Evidence all work, though some of these tracks scream for The Lox’s Jadakiss and Styles. Please release the instrumentals, gentlemen. — Damien McPherson
