Brian Setzer covers “Blue Moon Of Kentucky”

Brian Setzer’s first instrumental album, due out this spring on Surfdog, finds Stray Cat reworking “Blue Moon Of Kentucky,” written in 1946 for Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs and the Bluegrass Boys. No orchestra this time, only Setzer, drummer Noah Levy and bassist Johnny “Spaz” Hatton. The songs are well-served by the spare backing, with the flash firmly focused on Setzer’s strings. The April 19 release on Surfdog is worth the price for the cool jazz of Far Noir East alone. —Damien McPherson
