Songwriters in the Round

Will Callery, Alan Rhody, John Gage and Mickey Clark team up at 9:45 p.m. on Friday, May 1, for a Songwriters in the Round show @ The Rud (422 W. Oak St.). Cost is $8.

Will Callery, who now lives in Leitchfield, Ky., was born in Owensboro and lived in Austin, Texas, for many years. He helped lay the foundation of the outlaw country music movement, with his song, “Hands on the Wheel,” which Willie Nelson recorded on his classic Red Headed Stranger album, and more recently is being performed by Norah Jones. Will also played guitar in Willie’s band for a short while, and has a new CD, Rider Comin’ In.

Alan Rhody, who grew up in Louisville, and now lives in Nashville, penned the Oak Ridge Boys first #1 hit, “I’ll Be True to You,” and has had songs recorded by a variety of artists, including Tanya Tucker and Hoyt Axton. His latest CD is Boxcars of Memories. Alan is also an accomplished painter.

John Gage is one of Louisville’s finest singer/songwriters. He is the person whose persistence and dedication helped develop Kentucky Homefront, a premier live venue/radio show that he hosts which promotes Kentucky music. John wrote the theme song for the show, and his latest CD is Just Between You and Me.

Mickey Clark was raised in Louisville, and after living in New York and Nashville, returned to Louisville over 30 years ago.  His songs have been recorded by The Oak Ridge Boys, Jerry Lee Lewis and others and his new CD, Winding Highways, was recently released on the ear X-tacy label.
