Savage Knights is a top flight instrumental ensemble that fuses a wide range of sound through 5 multi-instrumental players. Drawing on jazz influences (Ornette Coleman/Eric Dolphy) and heavy metal (Slayer), yet filtered by the sensibilities of Eric Satie and Bela Bartok, Savage Knights weave quite a tapestry. Primary composers Crowmeat Bob and Mike Isenberg, the driving force behind the band, utilize dual saxophones propelled by the ace drumming of Brian Donahue. Donahue’s former legendary group, Volere, performed complex and beautiful melodic compositions that owed as much to chamber music as anything else. The Savage Knights are every bit as eclectic and diverse! Ut Gret returns with its final concert of the year as they prepare to go into the studio to record an album of all new original material. The Grets have added the wonderful cello playing of James Vaughn (the Commonwealth) to the stalwart quintet of drummer Gary Pahler, reed players Gregory Acker and Steve Good, keyboardist Stephen Roberts and multi-string player Joee Conroy. In the Gret’s 27 year history, 2009 marks this quintet’s 10th year together. The incomparable Belly Dancer, Ruric-Amari, will also join them as has become their custom of presenting new works for dance in the most unlikely of venues.
